Calcium Needed For Better Bones

Attention to bone health is important for all ages, not just older adults. Researchers are finding a number of factors that can affect bone from conception forward. The dietary and lifestyle habits of a mother can affect the bone status of her unborn child. The years of childhood and adolescence, are when bones become longer and stronger. During middle and older age, the goal is to maintain the bone that has been acquired.

Through all these stages, nutrition is key. Vitamin D appears to play a large role beginning during pregnancy. Pregnant women need to cover their own needs as well as the needs of their child. With all the new research on this important vitamin, there is controversy as to exactly what that requirement should be, but many suggest at least a baseline intake of 1000 IU a day, some say as much as much as 2000 or more, especially for a mom of multiples. Vitamin D

You may already know that vitamin D can help build strong teeth and bones, but wait until you hear what else it can do for the rest of your body. D can keep you trim, boost your mood, ward off sniffles, drastically cut your risk of cancer, and more.

“We could prevent 150,000 cases of cancer annually if we could just increase vitamin D to optimal levels,” says Cedric Garland, a doctor of public health, a leading vitamin D researcher, and a professor of family and preventive medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

That’s great news, right? Yes, except for one huge problem: A startling report found that more than a third of all women fail to get enough D for healthy bones—and more than 75% of us lack the higher amounts needed for the vitamin to do its disease-fighting best. (more…)

Vitamin D

Vitamin is one of the most important, yet often misunderstood of all nutrients. Appropriately nicknamed the “sunshine” Vitamin , the body produces Vitamin D when exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet (UVB) rays. However, it is not abundant in many of today’s most popular foods, and almost non-existent in fast foods and processed meals. And as if this weren’t bad enough, some of the best sources of Vitamin D are ironically some the things we, as humans, tend to avoid the most frequently; exposure to the sun and Vitamin D-rich whole milk.
