Healthier Neighborhoods Help Keep Diabetes at Bay

DiabetesPeople who live in neighborhoods that promote physical activity and offer access to healthy foods may be less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, researchers say.

Their study included 2,285 people, aged 45 to 84, living in neighborhoods in Baltimore, Forsyth County, N.C., and New York City/Bronx. Their neighborhoods were assessed by asking residents questions, such as whether it’s easy or pleasant to walk in their community, and whether local stores carry a large, high-quality selection of fruits, vegetables and other low-fat foods. Average neighborhood scores were 3.68 for physical activity and 3.36 for healthy foods, the researchers found. (more…)

nose bleedingNose bleeds often result form dry mucosa followed by the trauma of blowing the nose from allergies and/or colds. Here is some basic information on how to deal with them.

The technically correct medical term for nose bleeds is epistaxis. They are classified on the basis of the primary bleeding site: anterior or posterior.

Anterior (90% of nose bleeds)

  • The most common source if bleeding is from the Kiesselbach plexus which is an anastomotic (think multiple roads coming together) network of vessels on the anterior portion of the nasal septum.
  • May also be due to bleeding anterior to the inferior turbinate.

Posterior

  • Bleeding will originate from branches of the sphenopalatine artery in the posterior nasal cavity or nasopharynx.
  • This is much more serious and usually require admission to the hospital and management by an otolaryngologist. (more…)

Sometimes over-the-counter drugs don’t ease my headaches. Home remedies ease my headaches better than drugs. Here are the ways to ease headaches without drugs.

Stay hydrated
You should drink plenty of cool, plain water. Sometimes a headache can be caused by dehydration. Drinking cool water will keep you hydrated and it will help you get your daily water intake.

Get enough sleep
Headaches can be brought on because you didn’t get enough sleep. If it’s possible, you should try to get seven or eight houses of sleep a night.

Avoid overusing pain medications
You should avoid going over the recommended dosage
of medication. That can make your headache even worse than it was before.

Get something to eat
You can ease your headache by eating something because it could be a hunger headache. You could eat some fruit to help your blood sugar because your blood sugar could be up or down.

Take a nap
Take a nap for a few minutes. Taking a nap relaxes you and you may not notice your headache. You can also try closing your eyes and not thinking about your problems in order to ease your headache.

Take a shower
