Health and Fitness has now become one of the major concerns. Earlier humans used to hunt for their living, due to which their body had to undergo a lot of physical exercise. This made life active and alert. Now, life has become more simple and easy. Everything we need is just a phone call away. This easy life has restricted humans to do that bit of physical exercise which is required to keep the body fit and healthy. We get instant, spicy and variety of food which lose their nutrition during the process.

How do we ensure that we have all that we need to have a healthy living? This is a big question among everyone. We need proper nutrition and a fit and belathy body. Good Health is all that one craves for. Becoming healthier and fitter though not very difficult needs dedicated efforts.

The basic foundation for a healthy individual starts from his foetal stage with proper and healthy nutrition derived from his or her mother. Hence, a pregnant woman’s diet stands atop all diets.

Your food shall be your medicine. Ayurveda has postulated the rold of food and especially nutritive foods for maintaining health as well as cure of diseases. Nutrients are necessary for the proper functioning of mental, physical, metabolic, chemical and hormonal activities. The body is like a machine that will repair and rebuild itself provided proper nutrition is provided by way of food.

Sumptous nutrition is available in fruits and vegetables. Fruits have the capacity to give all that a body needs.

Have high cholesterol?

You need to take eggs off the menu—permanently!

Reality It’s true that those with heart disease should avoid eggs—or at least eat only the low-cholesterol whites. Normal cholesterol? Eat no more than three eggs a week.

Shrimp lovers, beware!

The savory shellfish is awfully high in cholesterol.

Reality While shrimp does contain cholesterol, it’s low in saturated fat, which drives up LDL levels more than dietary cholesterol does. So pass the cocktail sauce (not the butter!) and enjoy your shrimp, in moderation.

Following a low-fat diet is the absolute best way to lower cholesterol.

Reality A better option: eating moderate amounts of heart-healthy fats, such as those found in avocado, olive oil and salmon.

Burger? Bacon? Sure, as long as you’re taking cholesterol-lowering meds.

Reality Taking cholesterol medication doesn’t give you free license to overindulge in unhealthy foods. “Eating poorly counters, to some extent, the effects of the medication,”

People with heart disease tend to have something in common: Many have spent decades eating too much saturated fat and not consuming enough fruits and vegetables.

After being diagnosed with coronary artery disease and undergoing a quadruple bypass surgery at age 60, Alfred Pasquale, a marketer of cheese products in San Rafael, Calif., learned to eat in moderation. “My wife and I don’t go out to eat as much as we used to, because I need to control what is on my plate,” he says.

But whether dining out or at home, most people can make dramatic progress by following the guidelines below.
* Cut meat intake: “If you had to target one particular food group to help your heart, it would be meat,” says Jeffrey Frame, PhD, a registered dietitian and professor of dietetics at Murray State University. “Animal products and saturated fat go hand in hand.”

* Swap red meat for other protein : Red meat is especially high in saturated fat, says Melissa Ohlson, RD, coordinator of the Cleveland Clinic’s preventive cardiology and rehabilitation nutrition program. Cutting portion sizes of steaks—or, better, substituting chicken or fish—goes a long way toward protecting the heart.

* Count fat grams: Ohlson also encourages heart patients to read labels of all packaged food. Anything with more than two grams of saturated fat per serving will do the heart more harm than good. You should also avoid any foods that have more than 1 gram of trans fat per 100 calories. Lots of packaged snack foods—including many baked goods, cookies, and potato chips—won’t pass the test.

* Bulk up on plant foods : The vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber in fresh produce and beans can help lower blood pressure while protecting arteries from damage.

* Keep your weight under control: A study of nearly 30,000 men found that over just three years men with BMI between 25 and 28.9 (which falls within the range typically defined as overweight) had a 72% increased risk of developing coronary heart disease—and obese men with BMI of 33 or above had a 244% increase—compared with lean men with BMI of 23 or under.

Two trials that looked at whether the omega-3 fatty acid DHA might treat or prevent Alzheimer’s disease have produced mixed results.

The studies were done because of “a long history of epidemiological studies that related fish consumption to cognitive function,” explained Bill Thies, chief medical and scientific officer of the Alzheimer’s Association. Fish is rich in DHA, but the research scheduled to be presented Sunday at the association’s annual meeting in Vienna, Austria, used DHA derived from algae.

An 18-month study of people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease “did not show treatment benefit in the study population as a whole, and does not support use of DHA for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease,” said study author Dr. Joseph Quinn, an associate professor of neurology at Oregon Health and Science University.
However, Quinn added that there was “an encouraging analysis of a subpopulation of the larger study,” showing a slower rate of decline in mental function among those who did not have the e4 version of the APOE gene. That version is known to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Between 70 percent and 80 percent of people have that gene version, Quinn estimated.

Still, “we’re not prepared to conclude that e4-negative people should be on DHA,” Quinn said. “We don’t know a mechanism that would account for a benefit in e4-negative people and we don’t know if our exploratory analysis would be confirmed in future trials.”

His study, funded by the U.S. National Institute on Aging, included 402 people, average age 76, with a daily dietary intake of less than 200 milligrams a day. Some took 2,000-milligram DHA supplements while others took a placebo. All underwent standard tests of mental function over the 18-month trial. The slower rate of decline seen in e4-deficient participants did not reach statistical significance.

The second study was a six-month trial of 900 milligrams a day of DHA in 485 people, average age 70, who did not have Alzheimer’s disease but had mild complaints about memory loss. Those taking the supplement made fewer errors on one memory test.

That trial was funded by the Martek Biosciences Corp., which markets the DHA used in both studies.

The results indicate that DHA supplements are appropriate for “people who have very mild memory complaints, which applies to a large percentage of the population at this age,” said Karin Yurko-Mauro, associate director of clinical research at Martek Biosciences. “We’re not talking about a disease stage here.”

The company is “looking at the potential for more trials,” but is still evaluating data from the completed study, Yurko-Mauro said.

“The results are certainly interesting,” Thies said. “There was some improvement in memory. Then you can get into a debate about what the real-world benefit would be of that improvement in memory.”

What is needed, Thies said, is a major trial for people with no Alzheimer’s disease but some memory problems. “DHA is a great candidate for such a trial because it is a food supplement that is currently available,” he said.

Meanwhile, Thies said, “it is too early” to make a recommendation about use of DHA supplements to prevent loss of mental function. “You would want to see more information in normal people before you make a recommendation,” Thies said. “In high doses, DHA does have side effects, so you would want to see a benefit to justify the risk you are taking.

Imagine your doctor giving you this prescription for your nasal allergies or hay fever: “Eat some grapes and call me in the morning.” Well, it’s not that far-fetched. Just as the right grade of gas helps your car run well, the right diet for allergies is important to help you feel your best.

A healthy diet for allergies or hay fever protects you in many ways. It helps keep your respiratory system strong. Many foods can help you breathe better because they open up clogged nasal passages. A nutritious diet also boosts your immunity to allergies. Certain foods have nutrients that can help boost your immunity and help your body fight sinus and respiratory infections, which are linked to allergies and hay fever.
The Link Between Diet and Allergies

Let’s take a short trip to the island of Crete. While skin allergies are common here, nasal allergies and wheezing are rare. Why? From childhood on, the bulk of the Crete islanders’ diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, and nuts. The natural foods in the Mediterranean diet are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect cells from the oxidative damage that causes diseases, and they have immune-boosting compounds.

In a study published in the journal Thorax, researchers found that Crete islanders who ate a Mediterranean diet had fewer allergies. They noted that diet staples such as nuts, grapes, oranges, apples, and fresh tomatoes were protective against allergies. The researchers also reported that eating margarine increased the risk of allergies and wheezing. This is because margarine is made with unhealthy fat that boosts inflammation.

How 3 Foods Fight Allergies
Here’s how the anti-inflammatory properties of some typical foods on the Mediterranean diet protect against allergies.

Nuts: These are a great source of magnesium and vitamin E. Studies show that magnesium helps increase lung function and may also protect against wheezing in patients with asthma, which causes inflammation of the lungs. Vitamin E is an immune booster and has been shown to reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections, especially the common cold. As an antioxidant, Vitamin E protects the body from damaging free radicals. Free radicals can cause oxidative tissue damage, which triggers inflammation and problems like allergies and asthma.
Apples, Oranges, and Tomatoes :These three fruits are super sources of another antioxidant, vitamin C. Researchers found that they gave protection against allergies and asthma in the Crete diet study. This is important because nearly half of people with asthma also have allergies.
Grapes: The skins of red grapes in particular are filled with antioxidants and resveratrol, which reduces inflammation in the body. The Crete diet study found that grapes gave protection against both allergies and wheezing.

What does nutrition have to do with mental health? You might be surprised to find out the truth behind what happens when a person has a nutritional deficiency.

Nutritional deficiencies can cause all sorts of psychiatric symptoms including apathy, low energy, irritability, insomnia, low energy, agitation, fatigue, concentration problems, aches and pains, weight changes, including weight loss or weight gain. Sound a lot like the symptoms of depression? The truth is the average American diet of fast food is low in vital nutrition that you need for your body to function correctly.

This isn’t to say that all depression is caused by bad nutrition but it’s certainly a contributing factor in many cases and poor nutrition will always make depression worse. Antidepressant drugs also do not correct nutritional problems. So if your depressed because of nutritional problems an antidepressant will only partially cover up the problem and you body still won’t function correctly.

Digestive Enzymes are enzymes that specifically work in the digestive system to facilitate the digestion, absorption, and transportation of nutrients. They also work to promote timely elimination of digestive waste products that are not of use to the body. Without enzymes, our cells would not get adequate nutrition and we would not survive.

Enzymes function as catalysts to enhance and dramatically speed up biochemical reactions that occur in every one of our cells. They are only activated in water, so staying hydrated is very important for enzymes to work effectively. Enzymes must be present to ensure proper digestion of nutrients, energy production, metabolism, transportation of fluid to cells, and elimination of toxins among many other functions.

Enzymes exist in foods to help our body’s breakdown what we eat. Raw, uncooked foods are the only foods that contain enzymes. Since the majority of our diets are cooked foods, we significantly limit the enzymes available in our food for digestion, thus putting more stress on our digestive systems. Some supplemental enzymes should be taken with food to enhance digestion and absorption of nutrients, whereas other supplemental enzymes should be taken on an empty stomach to support circulation, decrease inflammation, support our immune systems and combat stress. Imbalances in these factors have been scientifically proven to be associated with or the cause of numerous diseases.
