Sometimes over-the-counter drugs don’t ease my headaches. Home remedies ease my headaches better than drugs. Here are the ways to ease headaches without drugs.

Stay hydrated
You should drink plenty of cool, plain water. Sometimes a headache can be caused by dehydration. Drinking cool water will keep you hydrated and it will help you get your daily water intake.

Get enough sleep
Headaches can be brought on because you didn’t get enough sleep. If it’s possible, you should try to get seven or eight houses of sleep a night.

Avoid overusing pain medications
You should avoid going over the recommended dosage
of medication. That can make your headache even worse than it was before.

Get something to eat
You can ease your headache by eating something because it could be a hunger headache. You could eat some fruit to help your blood sugar because your blood sugar could be up or down.

Take a nap
Take a nap for a few minutes. Taking a nap relaxes you and you may not notice your headache. You can also try closing your eyes and not thinking about your problems in order to ease your headache.

Take a shower
Taking a shower may relax you and ease the tension in your head. You should try and take a warm shower because that may relax you. (more…)

Flu Can Raise Chances of Heart Attack

fluPeople suffering from the flu may be at higher risk for having a heart attack, especially those with heart disease and diabetes, British researchers report.

Because both seasonal and the pandemic H1N1 swine flu are circulating this fall and winter, people at risk for heart attacks are urged to get a seasonal flu shot and an H1N1 flu shot, which may reduce the chance of getting the flu and thereby lower the risk for a heart attack, experts say.

“Influenza is most concerning because of its secondary complications,” said Dr. Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine in New York City.

“Most of the time with influenza, death or hospitalization isn’t because of the influenza, it’s because influenza puts you in a weakened state — it’s a stress on the system,” he said. “So, it is not surprising that you would have the increased risk of a myocardial infarction during or right after an influenza infection.”

In addition, the flu virus may have a negative effect directly on the heart, Siegel said. “Flu stresses and strains the system,” he added.

To determine the risk of heart attack among those with flu, a research team led by Andrew C. Hayward, a senior lecturer in infectious disease epidemiology at the UCL Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology in London, looked at 39 studies conducted between 1932 and 2008. (more…)

Taking showers ‘can make you ill’

ShowerShowering may be bad for your health, say US scientists, who have shown that dirty shower heads can deliver a face full of harmful bacteria. Tests revealed nearly a third of devices harbour significant levels of a bug that causes lung disease. Levels of Mycobacterium avium were 100 times higher than those found in typical household water supplies. M. avium forms a biofilm that clings to the inside of the shower head, reports the National Academy of Science.

In the Proceedings journal, the study authors say their findings might explain why there have been more cases of these lung infections in recent years, linked with people tending to take more showers and fewer baths. Water spurting from shower heads can distribute bacteria-filled droplets that suspend themselves in the air and can easily be inhaled into the deepest parts of the lungs, say the scientists from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Potential threat

Lead researcher Professor Norman Pace, said: “If you are getting a face full of water when you first turn your shower on, that means you are probably getting a particularly high load of Mycobacterium avium, which may not be too healthy.”

12 Ways to Stay on Top of Stress

stressWhat can you do to try and stay on top of the stress so it doesn’t affect your health, happiness, or waistline?

1. Exercise. Amen for endorphins. Believe me, they’ve helped me many days with my perspective. If you have to work out, then go take a brisk walk and get that blood flowing. It isn’t about working out to lose weight — it’s about being healthy and staying sane.

2. Eat the real stuff. Crappy food (fast, processed, and loaded with sugar) doesn’t help your chemical brain and body handle stress. Living food, real food, helps support your mind and body while it’s trying to deal with the million things coming its way. Every time I reach for the chocolate, I’m looking to feel something from it. Don’t get me wrong — if it’s just a little here and there because I enjoy the taste of it, great. But if I’m using it the minute I feel overwhelmed, then that’s when that food is no longer OK to eat. It doesn’t make the problem go away, and then I just feel bad about eating the food to pacify myself. Grab green food instead. Put things in your mouth that are going to support your immune function and keep you levelheaded.

3. Notice. Try not to let the stress overtake you. Recognize the situations that cause the stress and notice them coming your way. You have a better shot at fending off the full effects of the stress when you can anticipate it.

4. Get it off your chest. Talk to a friend or partner about the stress. Sometimes just getting it off your chest can help unload some of the burden. (more…)

And as bones start to thin after menopause, the toxic metal could be released into the bloodstream, where it can increase blood pressure and possibly lead to neurological and kidney trouble.

How to fight back? Calcium, vitamin D, and regular exercise all can slow bone loss and reduce the amount of lead that moves from the bones into the blood, Silbergeld says. To keep more lead from climbing aboard, reduce dust in your home with either frequent wet-mopping or good vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered cleaner. 10-Minute Exercise Schedule Good for Your Heart

Studies have revealed that short-term increments of exercise could help lower fats in the blood after eating a fatty meal. These findings could be just the motivation for the people who claim they don’t have enough time to exercise need to get moving.

One expert stated that merely performing 10-minute exercise bouts for at least 30 minutes a day would work on lowering fats in the blood as opposed to no exercise at all. Not enough hours in the day to exercise no longer holds as a valid excuse as these short 10-minute bursts of exercise have proven to help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Experts also noted that taking a leisurely stroll around the block wouldn’t qualify as meeting this cardiovascular benefit. Instead, they suggested walking at a moderate pace or taking a light jog. The negative cardiovascular consequences of eating a high-fat meal happens when there is an abnormally high increase in fat, a condition known as postprandial lipemia, which has been linked to increasing the risk of heart disease.
